No podré darme el lujo de echarle a perder este libro por completo pues muchos hemos ya disfrutado también de la película y sabemos en qué acaba. Me concretaré entonces en ayudarle a recordar a los personajes principales y compartiré con usted dos momentos que la muy bien lograda película no llegó a retratar (por contar con distintos medios para contar la misma historia, claro; no ahondaremos aquí en eso). 

Uno de esos momentos tiene que ver con las razones por las que el libro en su conjunto logró capturarme: la cruel y vívidamente recreada sensación del hambre.  No el apetito que momentos antes de la hora de comer sentimos las personas sanas, no la gula que todos hemos saciado cuando hay comida en abundancia, no las simples ganas de comer sino el hambre. Creo que todos en algún momento hemos experimentado hambre acompañada de la certeza de que no probaremos alimento en un buen rato. Es hambre acompañada de desesperanza o hasta miedo. Aquí escuchamos a Katniss Everdeen, representante del distrito 12 y ganadora de los juegos, haciendo planes. En ellos nos refiere a Rue, la niña que representa al distrito 11 con quien Katniss se ha aliado y en quien Katniss ve a su hermana menor, Prim. Katniss menciona también a the Careers, los representantes o tributos de los distritos considerados como los de mejores posibilidades para ganar los juegos. Si mal no recuerda, ellos eran comandados por Cato y algunos de sus integrantes eran Glimmer y el mismísimo Peeta Mellark.

“…I’m distracted about my latest idea about the Careers and their supplies.  Somehow Rue and I must find a way to destroy their food. I’m pretty sure feeding themselves will be a tremendous struggle.  Traditionally, the Career tributes’ strategy is to get hold of all the food early and work from there.  The years when they have not protected it well… those are usually the years that tributes from other districts have won. That the Careers have been better fed growing up is actually to their disadvantage, because they do not know how to be hungry. Not the way Rue and I do.”

El otro momento de malsano terror se describe cuando Katniss y Peeta logran llegar a Cornucopia perseguidos por el rabioso Cato. Todos son atacados por lobos. Estos lobos han sido liberados por los Gamemakers, al igual que todos los demás “desastres naturales” y “regalos del cielo”. ¿En realidad algún día haremos felices apuestas en torno a qué pueblo sobajado bajo nuestros superfluos deseos sobrevive a cuál otro en televisión nacional?

“Muttations. No question about it… That’s when I get a look at the claws. Four inches and clearly razor-sharp… Each has a thick coat, some with fur that is straight and sleek, others curly, and the colors vary from jet black to what I can only describe as blond… Then one of them, a good size mutt with silky waves of blond fur takes a running start and leaps onto the horn. Its back legs must be incredibly powerful because it lands a mere ten feet below us, its pink lips pulled back in a snarl. For a moment it hangs there, and in a moment I realice what else unsettled me about the mutts. The geen eyes glowering at me unlike any dog or wolf, any canine I’ve ever seen. They are unmistakably human. And that revelation has barely registrered when I notice the collar with the number 1 inlaid with jewels and the horrible thing hits me. The blonde hair, the green eyes, the number… it’s Glimmer.”
